Tibetan was the official language of Tibet prior to the Chinese occupation and is spoken by perhaps 2m people there and in adjoining areas to the south and east. It is written in its own semi-syllabic script. The presence of six Tibetan-speaking schoolchildren in London was recorded at the time of the Multilingual Capital (2000) survey. Three of these lived in Islington.
