Maltese is a Semitic language, more specifically a variety of Arabic with considerable influence from Italian and English.  It has official status in Malta and, unlike all other Semitic languages, is written in the Roman script.  At the time of the Multilingual Capital (2000) survey, Maltese was reported as the language of 118 London schoolchildren of whom the largest number were living in Lambeth.
